SABI was contracted to boost the profile of aid-for-trade organisation TradeMark East Africa (TMEA) among UK audiences, with the objective of increasing international awareness of the TMEA’s impact across the region and raising funds from donors.

The strategy was a multi-layered campaign encompassing media engagement and stakeholder consultation with key players identified across development, business and government communities.

Successes include featured pieces in media outlets from the Guardian to Reuters, and private engagements with key government officials and advisers. Additional funding was secured from both new and existing donors in Europe.

After working closely with TMEA in the UK for a period of 6 months, TMEA subsequently granted SABI a mandate to support their activities across Europe.

A presidential campaign for the Zambian leading opposition.

SABI was contracted to support opposition United Party for National Development presidential candidate, Hakainde Hichilema (HH), in the 2015 and 2016 elections in Zambia. The challenge was to increase HH’s support from 18% of the vote in the 2011 elections, help secure funding for his campaigns, and raise his profile internationally.

A campaign covering logistical, media and grassroots engagement that positioned the candidate so as to emphasise his assets and tackle perceived weaknesses, as well as aligning his campaign narrative with top voter priorities.

The outcome was an increased share of the vote from 18% in 2011 to 47% in 2016; higher than average turnout in candidate strongholds with 18% increase and, positioning of the contest as a clear ‘two-horse race’, with no other opposition candidate achieving even 1%.

Vote Leave

European Referendum for the UK.

SABI was contracted to provide events and logistics support to the Vote Leave campaign for a period of four months leading up to the 2016 EU referendum.

The challenge was to draw up a schedule that coordinated the activities of high profile supporters, covered as much ground as possible, and supported intensive efforts to turnout voters in key constituencies of support, as well as designing an engaging schedule to maintain momentum and generate excitement.

The approach we took started out with extensive consultation, liaising with the Head of Ground Campaigns and local regional structure in particular to assess existing capabilities, resources and weaknesses. We then met with each of the high profile supporters to understand availability before pulling together and implementing a comprehensive campaign schedule.

The success of the campaign was seen in the results of the referendum, in which 52% of voters opted for leave.

SABI Group undertook extensive field research across the country conducting interviews across every level of Ghanian society to establish how business conditions could be most effectively improved.

The findings and recommendations were then drawn together and an action plan, along with a short film, was presented to the President, under the title Ghana Beyond Aid. This plan is now being implemented by the Government.

SABI was contracted to provide Barratt London, a leading property development company in London, with an extensive research report into the two leading candidates in the 2016 London Mayoral elections, providing analysis of the implications for the company depending on the outcome of the contest.

The challenge was to establish how the campaign proposals of the candidates would translate to policies once in office, and how the team they would build around them would interact with companies in the property sector.

A series of interviews and consultations to inform a final report that combined factual information with insight and commentary based on these engagements were held, following a report that enabled the client to move quickly and adeptly to position the company strategically following the result.

Constitution Reform Group

Testing the public appetite for a new Act of Union.

The Constitution Reform Group (CRG) was founded by a group of politicians, business leaders and academics who wish to bring about a new Act of Union for the United Kingdom, following the domestic turbulence of the Scottish referendum and Brexit.

Prior to taking their new bill to Parliament, they sought to test the details of their new bill with the British public to measure the level of public support for the details.

SABI Group carried out a series of focus groups across England and Scotland on behalf of CRG, testing the public appetite for the proposed amendments with a view to gaining increased public support for a new Act of Union. The findings of these focus groups were then drawn up into a final report and presented to the Steering Committee of the CRG.

A charitable trust with a strong commitment to supporting economic

development in Africa.

A long list of around 100 organisations and individuals was compiled following initial consultations. These were then evaluated in terms of specific criteria set out by Gatsby, such as partner alignment, values, and typical size and duration of commitment, in order to compile a short-list. The highest ranking organisations and individuals were subsequently profiled in detail and the the full findings set out in an extensive report presented to Foundation staff.

SABI Group was engaged by the Gatsby Foundation in Spring 2017 to help identify potential partners to invest in the Trust’s Africa-focused programmes. The project encompassed in-depth research of grant-making foundations, impact investors and HNWI’s with an interest in East Africa and economic development from across Europe, the US and Africa.
